Appreciative Inquiry for Signs of Safety
David Cooperider and colleagues first used the term Appreciative Inquiry in 1987 to describe a
process that ‘gives life’ to an organization by looking at where they had been successful so that
ideas of how it might grow could be identified and put into action.
Steve Edwards and Andrew Turnell laid the groundwork for Signs of Safety by identifying and
highlighting everything that worked in child protection practice. To grow the model, they used the
Appreciative Inquiry process to draw out and illuminate details of how positive outcomes were
achieved in the work with families, children, and their networks.
Learning from examples of effective practice is foundational for the success of any Signs of
Safety implementation and as such is a key priority for organizations working towards ongoing
growth and development.
